Tips for Selecting the Perfect Barstool

Finding the perfect barstool is more than just making sure it fits. Selecting a bar or dining stool also means evaluating your décor needs and your personal style. I’ve got some tips to help you select the perfect stool for your space.

    Basic Barstool Styles

First of all, there are four basic stool styles.

    Contemporary Stools

Contemporary (or modern) stools usually feature simple and straight lines. Most of the time, they will come without a back.

    Country/Rustic Stools

These styles offer textures and sometimes a two-tone look which will neatly complement casual décors. Country and rustic barstools are available with or without a back.

    Traditional Stools

Traditional bar stools are usually reserved for more formal spaces or homes with very traditional décor. They will often come in a combination of wood and fabric and feature classic details like fluted or reeded legs.

    Transitional or Urban Stools

Featuring straight lines, this style of stools often comes with a wood back and without an upholstered seat which provides a cleaner and minimalist look to the stool.

    Other Style Factors to Consider

    Adjustable Height

Some barstools come with a hydraulic pump that allows you to adjust the seat up or down. This can be helpful if you have small children and adults who will both be using the stools at different times.

    Swivel

The swivel function allows the seated person to turn from side to side without moving the chair base. Likewise, memory swivel allows the stool to rotate back to the same position after someone has rotated it. This is the perfect option for someone who likes to keep their home looking tidy.

    Frame Materials

The frame can be constructed out of wood, metal, wicker, or plastic. All of these materials are quite durable, so focus on selecting a material that works with your existing décor.

    Seat Materials

You can choose from a large selection of seat materials including upholstered, wood, metal, and wicker. If you have small children or are using these stools in a high-traffic area, consider a material like wood or metal that's easy to clean.

    Arms

Some stools come with arms, which can create a more formal look. Be sure to measure the height of your bar before purchasing them to ensure the arms will easily slide under the counter. You can select stools with cushioned or padded arms for a more comfortable experience and ones with wooden arms for more structure and function.
